Cervical Dysplasia Tests
Pap Smear
A test that examines cells scraped from the surface of the cervix (the lower, narrow part of the uterus). This test is performed by inserting an instrument into the vagina and gently scraping the outside of the cervix to collect tissue. The tissue is placed on a glass slide and sent to a lab for examination of the cells.
Colposcopy
A test that allows your doctor to look at the cervix through a lighted magnifying instrument called a colposcope. The colposcope can also collect small biopsies (cell samples) to be examined under a microscope.
Cervical Dysplasia Treatments
Cryotherapy
A procedure that destroys abnormal tissue through freezing. A special instrument places liquid on the cervix, which freezes and destroys the abnormal tissue.
Laser Therapy
A procedure that uses beams of light to destroy abnormal tissue. The laser light is used on the cervix destroy the areas abnormal tissue without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue.
Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
A procedure that uses a small, low-voltage electrical wire loop to cut out abnormal tissue on the cervix.
Gardasil
A vaccination that can be given to pre-adolescents, adolescents and young women that guards against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and helps to prevent cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. This vaccine is offered only to our patients and is not available on a walk in basis.
