Liver Transplant Tests at University of Colorado Hospital

Liver transplant patients may receive the following tests throughout the liver transplant process.

Common Liver Transplant Tests

Chest X-Ray

Determines if your lungs and lower respiratory tract are healthy.

Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

Reveals how well your heart is working and may show heart damage that was previously unsuspected.

Ultrasound with Doppler Examination

Uses sound waves to examine the bile ducts, as well as the liver’s veins and arteries. It is commonly done in all liver transplant recipients before and after transplantation.

CT (CAT) Scan

A computerized, radiology image that shows the size and shape of your liver and major blood vessels.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Uses a magnetic field to provide three-dimensional images of your internal organs.

Blood Tests

Check your blood count, blood and tissue type, blood chemistries, immune system function and certain infectious diseases.

Pulmonary Function Test

A breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working and determine your blood’s capacity to carry oxygen.

Cholangiogram

An X-ray of the bile ducts that shows any obstructions or growths.

Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Series

X-rays of the upper GI tract that show whether your esophagus and stomach are disease-free.

Lower GI Series

X-rays to make sure your intestines are healthy.

Renal Function Studies

Determine if your kidneys are working correctly. You may be asked to collect your urine for 24 hour or may need a blood test such as serum creatinine.
