All certified nurse midwives (CNMs) at University of Colorado Hospital are board-certified registered nurses with master’s degrees. They are experts in women’s health, pregnancy and birth, who support all of your physical and emotional needs during pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery. Our CNMs will get to know you and your family so they can better care for your individual needs.

About Midwifery at University of Colorado Hospital

Midwifery means that prenatal (before-birth) care, care during labor and delivery, and postnatal (after-delivery) care, is provided by a certified nurse midwife (CNM).

Midwifery offers a childbirth experience focusing on natural methods to support and care for women through pregnancy and childbirth. Midwifery can also provide family planning and annual exams for women who are not pregnant.

Midwifery Services available at UCH

The Center for Midwifery at University of Colorado Hospital provides care during the following birthing methods:

  • Vaginal Birth
  • Water Birth – A birthing method where labor and delivery happen in a warm pool of water. This method is available for carefully chosen, low-risk women.
  • Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) – A vaginal delivery for women who have had a prior C-section birth.

Easing pregnancy and childbirth

The Center for Midwifery offers many methods to help with pain and discomfort during pregnancy and childbirth including:

  • Prenatal Massage
  • Chiropractic Care – Adjusting the spine and neck to relieve pain and discomfort.
  • Doula Support – A doula is a person who provides emotional and educational support during pregnancy and childbirth. Doulas do not provide medical care.
  • Aromatherapy – Using certain smells for relaxation and relieve stress.
  • Childbirth Education
  • Breastfeeding Assistance
  • Epidural Anesthesia – Medication injected into the lower back that blocks all pain below the belly button for several hours.
  • IV Pain Medication – Medication given through an IV to help relieve pain.
