What are Fungal Infections?

Fungal infections are caused by tiny spores in the air. These spores are often inhaled or land on our skin. Therefore, a majority of fungal infections start in the lungs or on the skin. People with weakened immune systems or those taking antibiotics are more likely to get fungal infections. Only about half of all spores are harmful to people.

Fungal infections range from yeast infections to serious lung infections. There are antifungal medications available. Some are applied to the skin or nails, and others are taken orally. Fungal infectious can be difficult to kill, and often require months of treatment. Fungal infections include:

  • Coccidioidymycosis (Valley Fever)
  • Cryptococcosis
  • Fungal sinusitis
