What are Bone & Joint Infections?
Bone and joint infections occur when a bacterial infection is spread from one part of the body to a bone or joint through the blood. The infected bones begin to produce pus, and this can result in an abscess, or pocket of pus. In time, the infection can interfere with the bone’s blood supply. This can cause the bone to die. One of the most common bone and joint infections is called osteomyelitis. Bone and joint infections can cause a number of symptoms, including:
- Pain in the bone
- Swelling, redness and warmth near the infected bone
- Fever
- Nausea
- General ill feeling or discomfort
Several factors increase a person’s risk for bone and joint infections, including trauma, diabetes, hemodialysis and intravenous drug use. If you are experiencing symptoms similar to those of a bone or joint infection, you should be seen by an infectious disease specialist.
