What is Pulmonary Hypertension?
Pulmonary hypertension is elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, which supplies blood to the lungs. The disease is either idiopathic (no known cause) or associated with other conditions such as connective tissue disease, liver disease, congenital heart disease or chronic thromboembolic disease (clotting in blood vessels).
The idiopathic form of the disease occurs in 1-2 cases per 1,000,000 and affects women about twice as often as men. It usually occurs in women between the ages of 20 and 40, it but can occur in either sex at any age.
