What is a Heart Murmur?
A heart murmur is a sound, not a disease. Most are not considered harmful. However, a murmur can be a sign of heart problems that could lead to a heart attack or stroke. Causes of abnormal heart murmurs are:
- Birth defects in the heart wall (septum) or valves
- Rheumatic fever, which is caused by a bacterial infection
- Endocarditis, or inflammation of the lining of the heart or valves, caused by bacterial infection
- Calcification, or hardening, of the valves, which is usually the result of aging
