Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is the number one killer of both men and women in America. For this reason, University of Colorado Hospital has created a special program to help prevent heart disease before it starts.
Our Cardiac & Vascular Prevention Center provides thorough screening, imaging and evaluation services. Our goal is to improve health and prevent costly procedures.
Patient Education
Your risk of heart disease increases with age. But it’s never too early to recognize and manage the risks of heart disease.
Risks of heart disease include:
- Family history of heart problems
- Age (45 years old for males; 50 years old for women)
- Post-menopausal status in women
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Inactivity
- High levels of fat in the blood (hyperlipidemia)
To prevent or reduce the spread of heart disease you should:
- Visit your doctor regularly
- Make lifestyle changes (quitting smoking, controlling your fat, salt and sugar intake)
- Take prescribed medications
