What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when a blockage in the blood vessels leading to the heart stops blood from flowing to the heart muscle. The loss of blood flow damages the affected area of the heart and can lead to death. Nearly 8,000,000 people suffered a heart attack in 2004.

Symptoms of heart attack include:

  • Sharp pain, severe pressure, burning or aching in the chest lasting 20 or more minutes (angina)
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath

If you believe you are having a heart attack, please call 911.
