What is an Aneurysm?

An aneurysm is an abnormal widening or bulging in an artery. They weaken the artery wall and may cause it to rupture and put the patient’s life at risk. Aneurysms can be present at birth. Other possible causes are:

  • Artery wall defects
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Build-up of fatty deposits (plaque) that restrict the flow of blood in the artery (atherosclerosis)

Aneurysms can occur in the:

  • Aorta (most common)
  • Brain (can lead to a stroke)
  • Heart
  • Other body parts

Research

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved two devices to treat patients with blockages in the neck (carotid) arteries with catheter-based interventional stents, effectively eliminating the need for surgery. The Cardiac & Vascular Center at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) uses these stents on aneurysms and carotid artery diseases.
