What is Prenatal Diagnosis & Genetics?

Women who are pregnant may want to consider genetic testing and counseling. These tests can determine if your baby is at risk of being born with a birth defect. They also can determine if your unborn baby has any abnormalities in the womb.

If any concerns arise through the testing, genetic counselors can provide information to help you understand the test results. High risk obstetric doctors called perinatologists also are available to talk with you about your treatment plan and options.

Genetic Factors that Affect Child Birth

  • Age of the mother or father
  • Family or personal history
  • Environmental exposures during pregnancy
  • Abnormal test results
  • Ethnic background
  • Ultrasound findings
