Laser Surgery at University of Colorado Hospital
Why Choose University Laser Vision for Laser Eye Surgery?
Just as there are various types of laser eye surgery, there are various types of laser eye surgeons. At University Laser Vision, not only are our physicians some of the most renowned and experienced LASIK doctors in the nation, they're also some of the most knowledgeable.
Superior Expertise
Dr. Michael Taravella and Dr. Richard S. Davidson, our refractive eye specialists, are fellowship-trained cornea surgeons. This means each doctor spent an additional year of training with specialists to become corneal experts. Since the cornea is the part of the eye on which LASIK is performed, this experience is invaluable. As leaders in their field, both surgeons are also known for diagnosing and treating the most complicated refractive cases, spearheading groundbreaking research and training other surgeons in laser vision surgery.
Personalized Care
Our refractive eye specialists, Dr. Taravella and Dr. Davidson, are both personally involved in every aspect of your treatment from initial consultation to post-operative care. Our surgeons operate as a team and review cases together to ensure that you receive the highest care possible.
Thorough Follow-up
One year of follow-up is included in the price of surgery. Our surgeons are personally involved in post-op care to ensure the best possible visual outcome for you. Whether it’s four visits or fourteen, our refractive team is there for you every step of the way.
Cutting Edge Research
Being affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine gives us access to the most advanced research and clinical trials. Our doctors are not only excellent clinicians, they conduct research that contributes to advances in care and surgical techniques as well. Their research activities bring these technological advances closer to you.
Regardless what level of correction you need, the cost of our refractive procedures is the same for all of our patients. Our cornea fellowship-trained doctors work with you to determine which course of vision correction is best suited for your unique situation.
About Laser Refractive Surgery
Laser refractive surgery may be cutting-edge technology, but the premise behind this popular procedure is quite simple. Used to permanently correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism, refractive surgery uses the excimer laser to reshape the cornea - the clear covering on the front of the eye. This process, called “laser ablation,” changes how you see in much the same way that prescription glasses or contacts do.
Every eye is different, and not everyone is a candidate for LASIK surgery. Factors like the shape of the eye or thickness of the cornea may be a consideration. Thanks to the level of expertise of our surgeons, we can offer several different laser surgery options.
There are three primary refractive techniques used today:
- LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
- PRK (Photorefractive Keractectomy)
- Epi-LASIK (Epithelial LASIK)

In addition, our surgeons perform non-laser procedures such as intraocular contact lens procedures that may not be available at many laser centers. It is important to talk to your surgeon about all of your options.
Cutting Edge Technology
Our refractive surgeons perform cutting-edge procedures on the LADARVision System - the most advanced equipment available today.
