About Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Eye

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Eye is a specialized area of ophthalmology that deals with deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, tear (lacrimal) system, the bony cavity surrounding the eye (orbit), and the surrounding part of the face in both adult and pediatric patients. Ophthalmic plastic surgery (also called Oculofacial Plastic Surgery or Oculoplastic Surgery) is plastic surgery that is limited to the eyes and face.

Because surgery can affect one's ability to see, ophthalmic plastic surgeons are best qualified to perform this delicate surgery and also provide any care that the eye itself may need.  Surgery may be considered to repair damage from trauma or disease including cancer, to treat abnormalities present at birth or that progress with age, or for cosmetic reasons.

Some conditions that may be treated include:

Eyes: Cosmetic Surgery

Eyelids

Orbit

Lacrimal (Tear Drainage) System

Loss of an Eye

Eye Testing

A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to diagnose eye disease including tumors.  In the case of cancer and other diseases, the earlier an abnormality is discovered, the more likely it can be treated or cured.

The eye exam may include diagnostic tests including MRI, CAT, ultrasound and visual field tests.

Medical Team

An ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon is an ophthalmologist (medical doctor and eye surgeon) who has completed additional training in plastic surgery as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding structures.
