Lung cancer is one of the most serious cancers. Many other cancers of the chest are also very serious. As you surf the Web, you may come across depressing or scary statistics. However, statistics are averages, and since none of us are average, they cannot be applied to an individual. How well any individual patient does depends on:

• The exact molecular biology of the cancer, which is extremely variable
• How well a patient responds to treatment, which is unknown until tried
• The individual’s general fitness and attitude

Whatever your diagnosis, it is important that you make an informed decision on the best course of action, guided and advised by experts in the treatment of your particular cancer.

Cancer Information and Counseling Line

The CICL is a nationally recognized service that offers telephone counseling for people with cancer, as well as their friends and family members. This unique, free service is provided by the AMC Cancer Research Center, an affiliate of the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

• During a short-term telephone session, our trained CICL counselors take time to talk with you about your cancer concerns. All calls are confidential.
• Our counselors provide well-informed and caring support. They offer simple, clear answers to medical questions. They help you to address your issues and figure out how to communicate with others about your diagnosis.
• After treatment is complete, your CICL counselor can help you adjust to your life as a survivor.

Monfort Family Cancer Resource Center

The free Monfort Family Cancer Resource Center is located on the second floor of the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, 1665 E. Ursula St., in Aurora. The Center is a rich resource for people with cancer, regardless of whether you are receiving treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. Some of the support we provide includes:

• An American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Navigator, who helps you find your way through the cancer system and uncover helpful resources.
• A variety of books related to specific cancer types.
• Support groups and educational classes at our facility and in the local area.
• Computers with Internet access.
• Information about lodging and transportation services near our facility.
• Audio/visual materials for use during your treatment at UCCC. Topics include stress release, guided imagery, stories, spirituality and relaxation.
• Tours of UCCC for new patients, caregivers and special "Lemonade Tours" for children of cancer patients.

We are one of seven national members of the Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network, which is a joint effort to:

• Provide essential cancer survivorship services.
• Increase the effectiveness of survivorship care through research, development of new services and sharing of best practices.

• Harness the expertise and experience of leading medical centers to significantly increase progress in the field of cancer survivorship.

Lung Cancer Education & Outreach Activities

Annual Colorado Cancer Day Event Presented by the University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC) – An educational update on diagnosing, treating and surviving common cancers. Held each fall, it contains parallel sessions designed for doctors and other health professionals, or for the general public and anyone who has been touched by cancer.

Frankly Speaking About Lung Cancer Presented by UCCC – Held once or twice a year, the evening features a dinner as well as information about lung cancer. Past speakers have included doctors and lung cancer survivors.

The Gift of Life and Breath – An annual fun run/walk in aid of lung cancer was started in 2007 by a UCCC lung cancer patient and in its first year raised nearly $300,000 for research on the early detection of lung cancer.
