Cervical Cancer Treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center

Cervical cancer forms in tissues of the cervix (the organ connecting the uterus and vagina). An estimated 11,150 new cases of cervical cancers will be diagnosed in the United States during 2007.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the major risk factor for development of cervical cancer. People more likely to be affected include women who have:

  • Had many sexual partners
  • Had first sexual intercourse at a young age
  • Not had regular screenings
  • HIV infections
  • Smoked tobacco
