Colorectal Cancer Treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine, the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last six inches of your colon.  They are often referred to as colorectal cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about 112,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer and 41,000 with rectal cancer each year.

Most colorectal cancers develop slowly over time. They may start as a polyp - a growth on the lining of your colon. If the polyp is an adenoma polyp, it may grow into adenocarcinoma. Regular colorectal screening tests can allow doctors find these polyps and remove them before they become cancer.
