Blood Donation at University of Colorado Hospital
The Blood Donor Center at University of Colorado Hospital is open to anyone who is interested in making a donation. All donations benefit patients right here at the hospital, and are critical to patient care:
- Platelets are needed for blood clotting. Platelets are used during open-heart surgery and organ transplants. They are also an important part of cancer therapy and treatment of blood disorders
- Red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues and organs of the body. They are needed for transfusions to replace blood lost because of trauma or surgery. Patients with low red blood cell counts (anemia) also benefit from transfusions
- Plasma is the liquid portion of blood. It contains blood-clotting factors that are critical to the care of patients with bleeding disorders
Your donation is essential to maintaining the blood component supplies our patients need. The components cannot be stored indefinitely. For example, platelets must be transfused within five days.
