What is Drug Addiction?
Millions of people in the U.S. are affected with long term dependency and/or addictions to alcohol and other drugs including illegal drugs, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs. Drug use and abuse touches the lives of every individual, family members, friends, co-workers and society as a whole.
- Deaths from excessive drug use have doubled since the early 1980s. Two of the leading causes of all drug-related deaths are AIDS and Hepatitis C which is contracted through exposure to infected bodily fluids and sharing needles.
- The economic cost of substance abuse or addiction is estimated at over $414 billion per year
- Nearly one in three children has a parent addicted to alcohol or other drugs. Children living with a chemically dependent family member are three times more likely to suffer from physical or verbal abuse in the family.
Anyone can become chemically dependent regardless of:
- Gender
- Age
- Racial or ethnic group
- Education level
- Income level
Symptoms of drug dependency or addiction include:
- Craving
- Loss of control
- Physical dependence
- Tolerance
