What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism describes the physical or mental addiction to alcohol.
Millions of people in the U.S. are addicted to alcohol and other drugs. But alcohol dependence doesn't just affect the addicted person. It touches the lives of family members, friends, co-workers and society as a whole.
- Nearly six percent of the U.S. population (12.6. million people) are considered heavy drinkers
- More than 100,000 people die from excessive alcohol consumption each year due to direct or indirect causes
- Nearly one in three children has a parent addicted to alcohol or other drugs. Children living with a chemically dependent family member are three times more likely to suffer from physical or verbal abuse in the family.
Anyone can become chemically dependent regardless of:
- Gender
- Age
- Racial or ethnic group
- Education level
- Income level
Symptoms of alcoholism include:
- Craving
- Loss of control
- Physical dependence
- Tolerance
