Diabetes Management

 

Course Description:
This course is designed for hospital and ambulatory registered nurses and other healthcare professionals that are interested in learning about the care of patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia in the hospital setting and in the ambulatory setting. Updates on current research, diabetes pathophysiology, and evidence-based practices regarding non-insulin and insulin therapies will be described in detail.

 

Class Objectives:

  • Report the prevalence of diabetes, including local and national data.
  • Describe the diabetes initiative program at University of Colorado Hospital.
  • Explain the pathophysiology and diagnosis of pre-diabetes and diabetes.
  • Review the research evidence supporting glucose management and national evidenced-based standards of practice.
  • Describe non-insulin treatments for diabetes: oral agents, injectables, nutrition and exercise.
  • Describe insulin therapy, including types of insulin, intensive insulin therapy with carbohydrate counting, and insulin pump therapy.
  • Identify the complications of diabetes and state screening measures.
  • Discuss glucose urgencies and emergencies such as hypoglycemia and DKA.
  • Describe diabetes self management education.
  • Examine specific glucose management strategies in the inpatient and ambulatory settings.

Continuing Education Credit:

An application has been submitted to University of Colorado Hospital. Please call Stephanie Insinna at 720-848-6694 for information about contact hours. Continuing education contact hours will be awarded to nurses who attend this program in its entirety and complete the course evaluation.


Payment Terms:

Payment is due upon registration. A $10.00 service fee will be added to all registrations made after the registration deadline indicated above.


Cancellation/Refund Policy:

Your tuition minus a $10 processing fee will be refunded if notified in writing 7 days prior to course.  University of Colorado Hospital reserves the right to cancel an offering. A full refund would be made if this occurs. Tuition cannot be transferred to another course.


Parking Information:

Parking at the Anschutz Medical Campus is limited or by permit only. Parking for this activity is available in the Cheyenne Wells parking lot, located on East 17th Place North of the Leprino Building . Hourly parking rates apply or the cost is $5.00 maximum for all day parking. Cash/Coin/Credit Card accepted. Handicapped visitor parking is available in the Cheyenne Wells parking lot.
