Description

  • Objectives:
    • Overview of the Preceptor Role Examine roles & responsibilities of the preceptor
    • Discuss similarities/differences between preceptor/mentor roles Recognize adult learning concepts
    • Identify Learning Needs & Developing Strategies
    • Describe the process to assess & meet the preceptee’s needs
    • Assess the preceptor & preceptee’s level of nurse proficiency according to Benner’s frame work
    • Identify strategies the preceptor can use to support the development of the preceptee’s critical thinking skills
    • Workplace Socialization
    • Acknowledge the importance of the preceptor role in integrating new nurses into the work setting
    • Identify strategies the preceptor can use to support the preceptee in the socialization process
    • Analyze nursing values and how they are demonstrated in the work environment
    • Emotional Intelligence and Self-Awareness
    • Define emotional intelligence
    • Associate the influence of emotional intelligence with the role of precepting
    • Discuss the personality type theory
    • Identify your individual personality type
    • Examine the possible effect of personality type on professional and personal relationships

Target Audience

RNs and all other staff invited to precept others by a manager/supervisor

Comments

  • Cancellations: Cancellations will be accepted through the Clinical Education Office up to twenty-four hours prior to the start of the appropriate class. For cancellations the registrant needs to contact Clinical Education at 365-5087. Any cancellation received after the twenty-four hour deadline will be considered a “no show”.
  • Employee No Shows: Employees who register for a particular class and do not attend the class will be considered a “no show”. Additionally, employees who call to cancel the class less then twenty-four hours prior to the start of the class will be considered a “no show”. Managers will be notified of “no show” employees and the employees may receive an unscheduled absence at the Manager’s discretion.
