Four Years and Counting – University of Colorado Hospital Again Named One of the Nation’s Top 10 Academic Hospitals
University HealthSystem Award honors top U.S. academic hospitals
AURORA, Colo. – University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) has just named University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) as the #10 highest-performing academic hospital in the United States for delivering quality health care. This honor makes four consecutive years UCH has been ranked in the top 10, including two years ranked as the nation’s #1 performing academic hospital.
Ranking based on strong outcomes
The quality rankings are given annually by University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), the 118-member alliance of the nation’s leading nonprofit academic medical centers and 299 of their affiliated hospitals. UHC compares outcome scores in patient safety, clinical effectiveness, clinical efficiency, patient satisfaction, mortality and equity, which is a measure of whether outcomes differ for patients of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
"To be ranked as one of the top 10 academic medical centers in the nation is an incredible honor," said John Harney, President and CEO of University of Colorado Hospital. "But to be ranked in the top 10 for four straight years shows the results of our relentless focus on quality, safety and providing the very best care for our patients."
Recognized as a best place for advanced care
Academic medical centers are the research- and medical school-based hospitals generally seen as the best places for advanced, complex care. University of Colorado Hospital is the leading academic medical center in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region, and is home to some of the nation’s best specialists and sub-specialists. Through the research focus of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, UCH offers clinical trial drugs and innovative procedures available at no other hospitals in our region.
"We’re honored to again be named one of the top 10 academic hospitals in the nation, but providing award-winning care for our patients is the number one reason we strive for the top," said Chief Nursing Officer Carolyn Sanders.
UHC ranked University of Colorado Hospital as the nation’s #1 academic hospital in both 2011 and 2012, and #8 in 2010.
University of Colorado Hospital is now part of University of Colorado Health, a Colorado-based healthcare system comprised of five hospitals, dozens of clinics and hundreds of physicians stretching from Colorado Springs to Wyoming.
"University of Colorado Health combines high-quality community hospitals with the research and advanced treatments available at University of Colorado Hospital to share and improve health care throughout the Rocky Mountain region," said Interim UCHealth President and CEO Bill Neff, MD.
In addition to being named among the top 10 academic hospitals in the United States, U.S. News & World Report named University of Colorado Hospital the best in our state in 2012 and 2013. U.S. News has ranked the hospital’s specialties among the best in the country for 19 consecutive years.
