University of Colorado Hospital ranked best hospital in the metro area

Another U.S. News ranking is the latest in growing list of accolades

AURORA, Colo. (March 29, 2011) – University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is the best hospital in the Denver metro area according to U.S. News & World Report.U.S. News ranked metro area hospitals in two categories: nationally ranked specialties and high-performing specialties.

UCH is nationally ranked by U.S. News in pulmonology (8th), kidney disorders (15th), rheumatology (19th) and cancer (44th).

In the metro area survey, U.S. News data ranksUCH in 10 other high-performing specialties: diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; psychiatry; rehabilitation, and urology.

The U.S. News metro area ranking adds to a longer list of accolades for UCH. In October 2010, UCH was cited by the University HealthSystem Consortium as one of the top 10 academic medical centers in the country based on quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction. The top 10 showing came after several years of continued focus on clinical improvement.

In March 2010, UCH received international designation for excellence in nursing by the American Nurses Credential Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. The four-year designation recognizes continuing excellence in nursing and overall patient care at UCH. The latest Magnet designation is the third consecutive time UCH has been recognized, and each time the designation becomes more difficult to achieve because the standards of evaluation are raised. Fewer than 30 hospitals in the United States have been recognized three times for nursing excellence by the Magnet progra

Last year, UCH also was among the first hospitals in the United States to receive national accreditation for its post-baccalaureate nurse residency program, in which graduate nurses develop advanced clinical judgment and learn safe, quality care.

“UCH has been fortunate in recent months to be recognized several times for the quality of the care we bring to our patients’ bedsides. We are proud to again receive recognition from U.S. News for the world-class care we provide,” said Bruce Schroffel, president and CEO of UCH. “Accolades like this are flattering, and they remind us we have to strive every day to build on and improve the level of excellence our patients expect and deserve.”

In the most recent honor U.S. News, using data from its 2010-11 edition of Best Hospitals, ranked hospitals in 52 U.S. metro areas with populations of one million or more. The first-ever metro area rankings identify hospitals that performed nearly as well as the nationally ranked Best Hospitals in at least one of 16 adult specialties.

The national rankings were one component of the metro area ranking. UCH is the only hospital in the state of Colorado - and among only a handful of hospitals in the nation - to rank nationally in multiple specialties. 2010 was the 16th year the hospital has appeared in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital rankings.  U.S. News created Best Hospitals more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases.
