Event Provides Prevention, Research and Treatment Information for Cancers Common in Women
Aurora, Colo. – An evening of inspiration, education and innovation brought 80 women, who braved a Spring storm, to the University of Colorado Hospital’s Cancer Center last week. It was one of many events designed to introduce women to the University of Colorado Hospital, the Cancer Center, our physicians, technology and research.
A place of hope
For women who are diagnosed with cancer, University of Colorado Hospital is a place of hope. Rosemarie Hamblin was one of the hosts of the event. She is a survivor of ovarian and uterine cancer who received treatment at the Cancer Center.
Event hosts Laurie Leprino and her cousin, Rosemarie
Hamblin, pose for a picture with guests at University of
Colorado Hospital's cancer education event.
Hamblin says when she first heard the words “you have cancer,” her head was spinning. But the people who guided her through her journey at the Cancer Center inspired her. “I saw people going about their work. They laughed, smiled, comforted and seemed so skilled. They calmed my fears, laughed at my stupid nervous jokes, wiped my tears, answered my questions and inspired me to fight the fight.”
Women at the gathering also received a message of prevention. Virginia Borges, MD, an oncologist in the Cancer Center, told the women there is one simple thing that can help prevent breast cancer. Borges, a leading researcher in breast cancer in young women, says the most important thing a woman can do to prevent breast cancer is exercise.
The only one of its kind in the Rocky Mountain region
In addition to hearing the inspiring story of a cancer survivor and the key to preventing cancer, women were given a tour of the Cancer Center, the only comprehensive cancer center in the Rocky Mountain region and one of only 41 in the country, as designated by the National Cancer Institute.
The University of Colorado Hospital is the Rocky Mountain region's leading academic medical center, and has been recognized as one of the United States’ best hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report. It is best known as an innovator in patient care and often as one of the first hospitals to bring new medicine to patients’ bedsides. Located at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo., the hospital’s physicians are all affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, part of the University of Colorado system.
