Saddle up to the University of Colorado Denver at the National Western Stock Show
Scholarships given to rural students
Denver (Jan 10, 2008) - This year, there's not just one, but two chances to connect with the University of Colorado Denver during the 101st National Western Stock Show held at the Denver Coliseum from Jan. 12 through Jan. 27. Students and faculty are returning for a second year to visit with stock show attendees.
Health sciences programs at UC Denver will be featured at two exhibit spaces on the main floor of the Expo Hall. One center will focus on education and research and the other will provide basic health care screening such as blood-pressure, cholesterol checks, and cardiac risk assessment. Students and faculty from the different schools will be staffing both exhibits and the school of pharmacy will be providing all of the equipment to check blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and pulmonary function tests. They also will be providing general lifestyle education related to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and tobacco addiction and cessation.
Participation at the stock show provides a great opportunity for prospective students and their families to become excited about the health sciences programs at the University of Colorado Denver. Volunteers interact with students from grade school to college. By increasing their exposure to and experiences in health careers and health career education, the hope is that more will choose a rural health career.
Additionally, a percentage of proceeds from both the Coors Western Art Exhibit and from the junior livestock auction allow more than 60 scholarships to fund agribusiness leaders and rural medical practitioners, who will practice in Colorado and Wyoming. This includes three awards to rural family medicine residents; three rural program physician's assistant scholarships, and four medical school Rural Track Scholarships. Scholarships total approximately $2,500 - $6,000 per year per student.
