University of Colorado Hospital Recruits New Chief Operating Officer
NYU executive makes the move to Colorado
AURORA, Colo. (April 1, 2008) – University of Colorado Hospital is pleased to announce John P. Harney as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Harney joins the hospital’s senior management team on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo., bringing a wealth of experience to this position.
Most recently Harney was Executive Vice President and COO at New York University Hospitals Center (NYU), rounding out a 20-year career there. In his position at NYU, he had operational responsibility for all services at the 704-bed Tirsch Hospital, in addition to more than 300 beds at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. He also oversaw the departments of human resources, information technology, and facilities and construction in addition to numerous other leadership roles within NYU’s health system.
Harney’s areas of expertise include a wide range of strategic, operational, and financial activities such as the design, creation, and financing of new organizational structures, programs and process improvements.
While at NYU, he also acted as the leadership liaison between the Hospital and the NYU School of Medicine. In addition, he also served as NYU’s Hospitals Center incident commander during the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Harney is a fellow in the American College of Health Care Excellence and holds an MBA in Healthcare Administration from the Baruch-Mount Sinai graduate program.
