University of Colorado Denver Awarded $150,000 in Scholarship Funding for Nontraditional Students

DENVER (Dec. 26, 2007) - The Daniels Opportunity Scholarship program has awarded the University of Colorado Denver two grants totaling $150,000 to provide scholarships to nontraditional students at the Downtown Campus and the School of Nursing on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Funding for the Downtown Campus addresses a unique population: first-year undergraduate veteran students. As increasing numbers of veterans return from active duty in the United States Armed Forces, this funding will enable UC Denver to offer specialized support for these students as they make a significant transition in their lives from military service to academic pursuit and civilian professional preparation. Beginning in fall 2008, the $100,000 grant will support 20 two-year scholarships, with each student receiving $1,250 each semester for their first four semesters.

"The scholarships provided through the Daniels Opportunity Scholarship Program will significantly lessen the financial burdens of our first-time enrolled veterans," said Frank Sanchez, PhD, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. "These awards will allow students who have served our country to focus on their transition to the University community, which we believe will increase their chances for a successful and rewarding undergraduate experience."

The School of Nursing will use a $50,000 grant to provide scholarships of $5,000 to five students in each of the next two years. The scholarships will benefit adult learners, defined as students age 25 and older.

"One of the guiding principles of the Daniels Fund is our belief that boundless opportunity can exist for each and every individual," said Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund. "It is our hope that these grants will unlock opportunities for students at the University of Colorado Denver."
