IRON

Iron reduction by phlebotomy for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes

Objective

The major goal of the study is to investigate effects of iron overload on insulin resistance. Subjects randomized to control group (no treatment) or phlebotomy (blood donation) to reduce iron load.

Eligibility and Other Participant Information

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Males and females aged 35-65
  • Type 2 diabetes diagnosis
  • HbA1c less than 7.5%
  • Treated with diet and/or metformin.
  • Duration of diagnosis of diabetes < 5 years

  Exclusion Criteria:

  • Hereditary hemochromatosis
  • Cancer (except cases currently with no evidence of disease)
  • Anemia
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions (rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or giant cell arteritis, or chronic infections such as hepatitis B or C) that could affect ferritin (Iron)
  • Hemophilia
  • Warfarin therapy
  • History of GI bleeding
  • Current glucocorticoid therapy
